Pain in the Neck

eleanor_ramilly

Had a bit of one last night and it seemed to be ramping up quickly (5 pm) so I took a dose* and went out to dinner. It subsided most of the way, but was back by midnight. Woke up with it in full blast mode this morning (9:30). Took another dose, washed down with Coke, massaged neck with muscle rub. Reclined in bath till 11. Headache is gone but I'm incredibly woozy (4:30 pm).

All left side. Muscles in shoulder/neck are tender as if bruised.

Pain in the Neck

Yesterday it started with stiffness in the neck, and coalesced into a headache around 5 pm. I took the cocktail* around 6 and ate dinner, but it was only a modest improvement, maybe from a 6 down to a 4. I did manage to fall asleep, but I woke up at 4:45 with horrible, horrible pain -- 9/10. I was afraid to move for a few minutes. I was sweating and faintly sick from the pain. I staggered downstairs -- my balance was seriously impaired -- and took another round of the cocktail* and staggered into the guest room. Trying to get back up the stairs seemed too hard. I was kind of scared lying there -- it was SO bad that I was wondering if there was something really wrong with me, if I was going to have a stroke or something. But eventually I fell asleep and stayed dead to the world for another five hours. I woke up feeling groggy, but the headache is gone. Of course, I missed yet another morning of work, but that's the way it goes.

How can I have another one? [Apr. 24th, 2008|01:38 pm]
Pain in the Neck

I haven't been keeping up with this journal, in large part because nothing really changes. I have headaches. Some Godawful, some just annoying.

Yesterday I woke up with one that was in the 3 range. Took ibuprofen, fended it off. Went shopping and got a mani/pedi, and was coming home yesterday afternoon when it suddenly ramped up. It was weird. It took about 5 minutes to go from a 3 to a 7 or 8. And of course I was driving, on the bypass, in 5 o'clock traffic. No exits, barely any shoulder, and it was the kind of twisting, stabbing pain that makes you sick. So there I was having those awful waves of cold sweat alternating with your face getting all hot, which usually immediately precede vomiting, and I am telling myself furiously "You CANNOT puke in your own lap 40 minutes from home."

Didn't puke, although it was a close thing. At the end of the bypass I pulled into Wendy's and got a big Coke and alternated pressing it to my face and sipping it for a while.

Inched home, making it worse again. Took the cocktail when I got there: 800 mg ibuprofen, 100 mg Tramadol, 10 mg Valium, 25 mg Phenergan and crawled into the bathtub. After about 45 minutes it was back around a 4, and I went out to dinner with Chris. It stuck around at that level until bedtime, when it sort of faded back to my constant pain level of about 1.5, which was nice because I could fall asleep.

I woke up tired -- the cocktail almost has a hangover effect. Not that I feel bad, like an alcohol hangover, but I'm usually really sleepy and maybe even sort of mentally impaired for a while. I was fine until about an hour ago, and I feel it coming back. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Same place, same kind of pain. I am trying really hard not to get pissed off and worked up, because I know tension is a major aggravating factor, but DAMN.

Had it all night, in my sleep. I mean that I would wake up periodically and feel this intense, awful pain and get groggily upset and toss and turn a bit and then drift off again. Repeat all night. Did not sleep well. Duh. Got up finally at 9 and took two 50 mg Tramadol and 1200 mg Daypro with a can of Vanilla Coke Zero and four Oreos. Coated neck, jaw, and forehead with Extra Strength Flexall. Crawled into very hot bath and stayed there two hours, lying flat on my back so that my neck and jaw could be in the water. Head improved from 8 down to 3-4, which is a level I can live with. Unfortunately, now that I'm out of the bath and upright, I sense that it wants to ramp up again. Can take more Tramadol @ 3, but it's not a good sign that the full dose is only lasting half the time it's supposed to. Fuck, why won't someone prescribe something that actually makes it not hurt at all? Oh, that's right -- the only things that are likely to work are Big Bad Drugs and It's Just a Headache.

Woke up with excruciating pain, left side. Had been fighting a knot/area that needed to pop in my left back for a few days, so I thought this was coming. Got up and took 1200 mg Daypro with breakfast and diet Coke. Improved from 8 to 5, but holding @ 5.

Started about 3 pm. Right side, diagonal. Started @4, worked up to 7-8. Ultimately took Ambien and went to bed. Nothing else worked: Daypro 1200 mg, heat, massage, Aleve, caffeine, food.

Pain in the Neck

My head's actually been pretty calm. But today I've woken up with a neck that feels as though I filled it with concrete. That and the throbbing behind my left eye and along my cheekbone don't bode well for the weekend. I can't, as usual, identify any cause. Had fondue for dinner last night, but nothing in it that's a classic trigger. No red wine, no aged cheese, no nuts. Got plenty of sleep. The weather did change -- rainy last night, clear today.

Time to go microwave the gel pack.

You know, what I hate most is the waste. The pain sucks ass, but knowing that this perfectly lovely Friday is a total writeoff because I'm going to spend it in a fetal lump curled around a microwaved hot pack drives me bonkers.

Fuck. My head has been tolerable for a while. Not pain-free, obviously, but consistently tolerable. I had a bit of real pain on Sunday, but heating pad+dark room+nap+drugs helped enough that I made it through the day all right. However, it's been hovering on the edge of bad all week, and the bad is here, today. Right side. Neck muscles like cement. Throbbing behind eye. 2xFioricet, not helping. 2 L water, not helping. 20 oz diet Coke (for the caffeine), not helping. 800 mg Motrin, as yet not helping. Fuck. It was here when I woke up, so we're going on 10 hours.
